Page Quest ("we", "our", "the app") is a personal reading tracker. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and how you can control it.

What We Collect & Why

• Account information (name, email, avatar — an emoji, a built avatar, or an optional profile photo) — To identify your account, display your profile to friends, and allow you to sign in across devices.
• Book library (titles, authors, genres, cover images, reading status, ISBNs, tags, series info, lending status, detailed ratings, DNF reasons, re-read history) — To power your personal library, track what you've read, and provide reading statistics and recommendations.
• Reading sessions (start and end times, pages read, duration) — To calculate your reading speed, daily progress, streak, and to power the stats and heatmap features.
• Notes, quotes, characters, and vocabulary words — To let you annotate your books and revisit your thoughts. Notes and quotes are also used when you request AI-generated summaries (only when you explicitly trigger this feature).
• App preferences (theme, daily reading goal, favourite genres, custom bookshelves, reading goals) — To personalise your experience and remember your settings across sessions.
• XP, achievements, reading streak, and reading buddy — To power the gamification features that help motivate your reading habit.
• Social data (friend connections, book clubs, friend challenges, activity feed posts) — To enable you to connect with other readers, participate in clubs and challenges, and share your reading milestones.
• Device push token — If you enable notifications, your device's push token is stored so that friends' Cheer and Nudge notifications can be delivered to your device. See the Notifications section below.

Your Control: Cloud Sync

Page Quest offers a Cloud Sync setting that you can turn on or off at any time from the Account tab.

• Cloud Sync ON (default) — Your data is stored locally on your device and backed up to our encrypted database hosted by Supabase. This allows you to restore your library if you reinstall the app or switch devices, and enables social and AI features.
• Cloud Sync OFF — Your data is stored only on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers. Social features (friends, clubs, leagues, feed) and AI summaries will be unavailable, but all personal reading tracking features continue to work offline.

Turning Cloud Sync off does not delete data already stored on our servers. To remove server-side data, use the "Delete Account" option.

What We Don't Do

• We do not sell your data — ever
• We do not share your data with advertisers
• We do not run analytics or track your in-app behaviour
• We do not access your data for any purpose other than keeping the app working

Third-Party Services

• Supabase — Handles authentication and encrypted data storage. No personal data is shared beyond what is required to run the service.
• Apple Sign In (iOS) — Optional authentication method. When you sign in with Apple, the name and email associated with your Apple ID (or Apple's private relay email, if you choose to hide it) are provided to our authentication provider, Supabase, to create and identify your account.
• Expo (push notifications) — If you enable notifications, your device's push token is stored by us, and notification payloads (such as a friend's Cheer or Nudge) are delivered through the Expo push service, which relays them to the Apple Push Notification service. Only the push token and the notification content are shared.
• Open Library & Google Books — Used only to search for book covers and metadata when you add a book. No personal information is sent to these services.
• Anthropic (Claude AI) — When you request an AI-generated summary or discussion questions for a book, the book title, author, and any notes or quotes you have saved for that book are sent to the Anthropic API to generate the response. This only occurs when you explicitly tap the AI summary feature. No data is sent automatically or in the background. AI requests are rate-limited to 20 per day per user to bound costs and prevent abuse; if you reach the daily limit, the feature will become unavailable until the limit resets at midnight UTC.

Device Permissions

The app may request the following device permissions, each only when you use the related feature:

• Camera — Used for scanning ISBN barcodes when adding a book. Images are processed on-device only; no photos are stored or transmitted.
• Photo Library — Used when you choose a custom cover image for a book or book club, or a profile photo for your avatar. A profile photo is uploaded to our private storage bucket and is shown to your friends via short-lived, access-controlled links (it is not publicly accessible). Cover images you pick are stored with your library data.

Social Features & Visibility

You can set your account to public or private. When private, only accepted friends can see your reading activity. When public, any Page Quest user can view your activity. Regardless of your privacy setting, you will appear in league rankings so competitive features work for all users.

What other users can see: your display name and avatar are visible to other signed-in Page Quest users when they appear in shared contexts (friend requests, your accepted friends list, activity feed posts, book club rosters, and league leaderboards). Your friend code is private and can only be resolved through a lookup that requires the exact code value; it is never listed or searchable. Your email, reading activity, notes, quotes, and personal stats are never visible to other users unless you explicitly choose to share them (for example, by becoming friends, posting to the activity feed, or joining a book club).

Notifications

Page Quest sends two kinds of optional notifications:

• Local reminders — daily reading reminders (at your chosen time) and a weekly reading digest (Sundays). These are scheduled entirely on your device.
• Friend notifications — when a friend sends you a Cheer or a Nudge, we deliver a push notification to your device. To make this possible we store your device's push token and route the notification through the Expo push service (see Third-Party Services above). You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.

Data Export & Import

You can export your library as a CSV file or import books from a Goodreads CSV export. Exported files are saved to your device and shared using the system share sheet. Imported files are read locally and never uploaded to our servers.

Share Cards

You can generate shareable images of your reading stats or book reviews. These images are created on-device and shared through the system share sheet. We do not upload or store these images.

Data Stored on Your Device

Page Quest caches a copy of your library data (books, reading sessions, notes, quotes, preferences, and session token) locally on your device so the app can work offline and load quickly. This data is stored inside Page Quest's private application sandbox, which iOS isolates from every other app on your device. It is not encrypted beyond the device-level encryption that iOS applies when you have a device passcode or biometric authentication enabled, which is the standard Apple-recommended protection for application data.

Best practice: keep a device passcode or Face ID / Touch ID enabled on your device. If your device is lost or stolen without a passcode, anyone with physical access could open the app and see your data in the same way you would.

Deleting Your Data

You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Account tab in the app. This will immediately and irreversibly erase your books, reading history, notes, vocabulary, social connections, preferences, push token, and any uploaded profile photo from both your device and our servers.

Children's Privacy

Page Quest is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app. The "last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised.
